This morning I woke up with a bad conscience because of last night… but the more I thought it over the more I could justify our action! Just before 11 am Gabriel from SAP rent a car was at the front desk and after having settled the papers he handed us over a Chevrolet Corsa for one month. Happy to be free and flexible now we went for breakfast half an hour later. Thereafter we made everything ready for departure, stowed our suitcases into the car and off we went direction north at 1 pm!

Da ich etwas besser im Navigieren bin, fuhr Doris die erste Etappe und ich lotste sie souverän aus der Stadt. Nach 1 ½ Stunden Fahrt kamen wir in Tigre an, informierten uns für eine Schifffahrt im Paranà Delta, hatten dann gerade noch Zeit zu parkieren und einen frischen Saft zu kaufen bevor es um 16:30 Uhr auf eine gemütliche stündige Schifffahrt ging. Auf den Inseln in dieser Flusslandschaft, die nur mit Boot zu erreichen sind, wohnen ziemlich viele Leute, es hat Schulen und Tankstellen und versorgt werden alle wiederum von Booten…
Because I happen to manage navigation better than Doris, she drove the first part and I piloted her masterfully out of town. After a 1 ½ hour’s drive we arrived at Tigre, informed ourselves about a boat trip in the Paranà Delta, had just enough time to find a parking lot and buy fresh fruit juice before we took off on a cozy one-hour cruise. There are a lot of people living on the islands of this river landscape which are accessible only by boat, there are schools and gas stations and everyone is provided with the essentials by boats again…

In brühender Hitze (34 Grad Celsius) über Brücken und viel Weideland ging es danach Richtung Norden und im nächstgrösseren Ort Gualeguay suchten wir um 19:30 Uhr ein Hotel, das wir dann auch schnell fanden: Das sympathische Hotel Jardin (http://www.hoteljardinsrl.com.ar). Wir machten uns kurz frisch, liefen dann die 2 Blocks ins Zentrum und suchten ein Restaurant, das offen war… eher ein schwieriges Unternehmen am 1. Januar! Wir fanden dann schliesslich das Restaurante Don Nicola und assen draussen auf der Strasse ein eher trockenes Stück Fleisch. Lustig war, wie je später es wurde immer mehr Autos voller Leute im stockenden Verkehr der Hauptstrasse entlang posierten: Ich habe noch nie so viele verrostete und uralte Modelle (Autos) gesehen! Es erinnerte mich an Ushuaia, wo mir dieses Balzgehabe schon aufgefallen war, nur hatte dort noch jeder seine Stereoanlage auf der höchsten Lautstärke laufen… ; )

In the blazing heat (34 centigrade) over bridges and lots of pastures we drove direction north and in the next bigger town Gualeguay we started looking for a hotel at 7:30 pm, which we found rapidly: The pleasant Hotel Jardin (http://www.hoteljardinsrl.com.ar). After having refreshed ourselves a bit we walked the 2 blocks to the centre and had difficulties finding a restaurant which was open on the 1st of January! Eventually we found the Restaurante Don Nicola and had a rather dry piece of meat out in the street. It was funny, the later it got the more cars full of people posed along the main street in stop-and-go traffic: I’ve never seen such a lot of rusty and old models (cars)! It reminded me of Ushuaia where I had noticed this kind of courtship display with the difference that there each and every car had their stereo system at full volume…
