Obwohl ich erst kurz vor 3 Uhr morgens schlafen ging erwachte ich schon früh... vielleicht war ich etwas nervös was meine Pläne ein Auto zu kaufen oder dann halt mieten betrifft? Eine atemberaubende Aussicht auf die Küste voller sich tummelnden Pelikane beruhigte mich etwas und ich beschloss erst einmal der Küste entlang joggen zu gehen. An der Reception sprach ich mit Guillermo über meine Autopläne und er versprach mir sich darum zu kümmern. Mit 10 Dollar in der Hand damit ich unterwegs einen Adapter kaufen (hier in Chile passen nur die 2-poligen Stecker!) konnte, machte ich mich auf Richtung Süden. Gleich neben dem Hotel befindet sich ein riesiges Mall, das aber erst um 10 Uhr öffnet - also suchte ich es auf meinem Rückweg auf. Da ich dort nicht mit US Dollars bezahlen konnte (den Minibus Transfer gestern Abend jedoch schon!), trank ich erst einen Espresso und erhielt das Rückgeld in chilenischen Pesos (1.000 CLP = USD 2 oder Fr. 1.75).
Despite going to sleep only at 3 am I woke up early… maybe I was a bit nervous about my plan buying or renting a car? A breathtaking view out of my window of the coast with lots of pelicans calmed me down and I decided to go for a run along the coast. At the reception I talked with Guillermo about my car plans and he promised to take care about it. Because I needed to buy an adaptor (the Chilean system only works with the European 2-pole system) I headed direction south with 10 US-Dollars in my hand. Just next to the hotel there is a huge mall complex which only opens at 10 am, so I visited it on my way back. I couldn’t pay with US-Dollars (but the minibus transfer yesterday I could!) so I went for an espresso and got my change in Pesos. (1.000 CLP=USD 2).

Zurück im Hotel ging ich frühstücken, im Pool einige Runden schwimmen und genoss danach die Sonne. Etwas später stand Guillermo vor mit und sagte, dass José Alejandro von der Madis Autovermietung, in der Lobby auf mich wartet... ein sympathischer Typ, der mir zwar einen günstigen Mietpreis offerierte aber als ich ihm von meinen Plänen ganz Chile entlang nach Süden zu fahren erzählte, mich warnte dass es schwierig und teuer sei ein Mietauto 4000 km weiter südlich zurückzugeben... er habe aber ab morgen einen Chevrolet Corsa 1,6 lt 2005-er Modell mit 76'000 km, den er verkaufen würde für 3200.000 Pesos... wir verabredeten uns für morgen, Dienstag, um 12 Uhr! Nun konnte ich mich wieder ganz der Sonne widmen und im Internet die Preise vergleichen... ; )
Schwarzgebrannt stieg ich in die Wanne - es war kein Dreck! ; ) Und danach ging es auf die Hotelterrasse um meinen Willkommensdrink, einen Pisco Sour, zu geniessen... Als die Sonne unterging wurde es kühl, ich holte meine Kuna Alpacajacke und machte mich auf zum nächsten Bankomaten. Mit Bargeld in der Tasche lieg ich ins Zentrum und setzte mich ins Restaurant El Arriero. Dort habe ich mich auch fast zu Tode ge(fr)essen: Mein Gott, die spinnen hier mit ihren Portionen! Ich möchte ja mal eine Portion für 2 Personen sehen! Ich hatte einen grillierten Fisch ohne Gräte ca. 500 g mit eine salsa de camarones auch ca. 500 g... mit den Beilagen wusste ich nicht wohin! Da ich aber noch Lust auf etwas Süßes hatte bestellte ich eine Kugel Schokoladeneis, der Kellner brachte mir 3 - als ich fragte, was das soll antwortete er das sei eine halbe Portion, eine ganze habe 5 Kugeln! Übrigens habe ich alles Eis gegessen, es war viel zu gut um stehen zu lassen, mit Mandeln drin!
Letzte Nacht mit vollem Bauch habe ich gut und 10 Stunden geschlafen! Um 11 Uhr ging ich zum Frühstück und eine Stunde später stand José Alejandro vor mir. Wir machten eine Probefahrt mit ‘meinem‘ Corsa und besprachen unser Vorgehen morgen, da heute wegen dem Dia de los muertos alles geschlossen war und nichts zu verrichten war. Er wird morgen früh einen großen Service veranlassen und mit mir um 12 Uhr zum Notar gehen um das Auto auf mich zu überschreiben und die Versicherung zu regeln. Bleibt mir nur noch morgen auf die Bank zu gehen oder eine Überweisung zu organisieren...
Nun konnte ich mich nochmals ausruhen und legte mich an den Pool und genoss nochmals das herrliche Wetter hier (20 Grad C am Tag - an der Sonne bedeutend mehr! - und nachts 15 Grad Celsius).
Back at the hotel I went for breakfast, swam some rounds in the pool and enjoyed the sun. Suddenly Guillermo stood in front of me and told me that José Alejandro of Madis Rent a Car was waiting for me at the lobby… a nice guy who offered me a good rental rate but when I told him about my plans to drive all along Chile he warned me that it would be very difficult and expensive to drop off a car 4000 km further south… he has a Chevrolet Corsa 1,6 lt 2005 model with 76’000 km tomorrow which he would sell me for 32000.000 Pesos… we agreed to meet tomorrow Tuesday at noon! Now I could go back to the pool and enjoy more sun while comparing prices in the internet… ; )
Toasted almost black I had a relaxing bath later on – it was not dirt! ; ) And thereafter I had my welcome drink, a pisco sour, on the terrace of the hotel… When the sun went down it became quite chilly, so I got my Kuna alpaca jacket and went to the next cash machine. Finally with cash in my bag I walked into the centre of town and choose the restaurant El Arriero. There I ate myself almost to death: My god, the portions are huge here! I’d love to see a portion for 2 people! I had a grilled fish without bones of about 500 g with a salsa de camarones of another 500 g… I didn’t know what to do with the side dishes! But I felt like having something sweet for desert so I ordered one ball of chocolate ice-cream, the waiter brought me 3 – when I asked him why, he answered that this was half a portion, a whole portion consists of 5 balls! By the way I finished all my ice-cream, it was too good to leave, and there were almonds in it!
Last night I slept well and for 10 hours with my full belly! At 11 am I went for breakfast and an hour later José Alejandro arrived. We went for a test drive with ‘my’ Corsa and discussed our procedure tomorrow as today was a public holiday and everything was closed. He will have the car serviced the first thing in the morning und meet me to go to the notary to have the car signed over to my name and take insurance. All that is left for me now is to organize payment…
Now I could rest once again and went back to the pool to take advantage of the wonderful weather here (20 centigrade at day – it feels significantly more on the sun – and 15 centigrade at night).

Gegen Abend lief ich der Küste entlang und bestaunte die alten Gebäude und Bahnhof, die aus der Zeit des Kupfer- und Salpeterbooms stammen. Nach einem Stadtrundgang mit Abstecher in Geschäfte wo man unglaubliche Schnäppchen machen kann (Nadine: Das wär was für dich gewesen, wie auch der Mall nebenan…), setzte ich mich auf eine Bank am Pier und genoss den Sonnenuntergang (hier geht die Sonne zurzeit um 20 Uhr unter)...
Unterwegs begegnete ich zufälligerweise Marcelo, einem Kellner des Panamericana Hotels, und dessen Bruder Giovanni, die für mich am Auto suchen waren und fanden, dass 'mein' Corsa zu teuer ist... ich habe mich auch im Internet schlau gemacht und nur Ältere mit doppelt so viele Kilometer günstiger gefunden... Ob ich wohl doch eins mieten soll? Ich setzte mich ins Restaurant Bariloche auf der Terrasse des Malls, bestellte mir ein Filet und eine halbe Flasche Tarapaca Gran Reserva und werde morgen sehen, was geschieht!
Übrigens habe ich bis jetzt sehr gute Erfahrung mit den Chilenen gemacht: Es sind sehr nette und hilfsbereite Leute, so hat mir zum Beispiel Guillermo von der Reception einen günstigeren Hoteltarif gemacht als ich bei booking.com gebucht habe!

Towards the evening I walked along the coast and marveled at the old buildings and the train station which derive from the time when copper and saltpeter boomed. After a walk through the center with a detour into shops, where you can get incredible bargains, I sat down to watch the sunset at a bench on the pier (presently the sun goes down at around 8 pm here)…
On the way I coincidentally met Marcelo, a waiter of the Panamericana Hotel, and his brother Giovanni, who were investigating cars for me because they found that ‘my’ Corsa was way too expensive… I had compared prices in the internet and only found older models with twice as much mileage which were cheaper… If I better should rent one? I got a table at the restaurant Bariloche on the terrace of the mall, ordered a tenderloin and half a bottle of Tarapaca Gran Reserva and decided to see what will happen tomorrow!
By the way up to now I only made good experience with the Chilean: They are very nice and helpful people, for example Guillermo of the reception made me a way better rate as I had booked with booking.com!
