Schlief ich wieder einmal herrlich am Meer… ich war auch sehr müde vom Reisen! Um 9:30 Uhr erwachte ich, meine Wäsche plage mich! An der Reception frage ich nach einer Wäscherei in der Nähe, die am Sonntag offen ist, die nette Dame antwortete: ‘Hier im Hotel!‘ Als ich sie fragt ob sie auch Kilopreise habe, war die Antwort positiv und zudem sei alles um 12 Uhr fertig! Das waren gute Nachrichten, ich suchte all meine Wäsche zusammen und gab es an der Reception ab.
Um 10:30 Uhr wurde mir wie vereinbart das Frühstück ins Zimmer gebracht. Danach genoss ich ein herrliches Bad mit Mandelöl aus Bolivien, packte meine Siebensachen und um 13 Uhr machte ich mich auf Richtung Valle del Elqui (Tal der Piscotraube) in die Berge…
I slept very well due to being on the ocean… and to be honest, I was very tired from travelling! I woke up around 9:30 am because I hadn’t solved the problem of my laundry yet, it became more and more! I asked the girl at the reception if she knew a laundry which is open on Sundays and she answered: ‘Here at the hotel!’ And when I asked her if she had prices by the kilo the answer was positive and in addition all would be ready at noon! What good news, I went to collect all my laundry and dropped it off at the reception.
At 10:30 am breakfast was delivered into my room as agreed upon yesterday evening. Thereafter I enjoyed a wonderful bath with almond oil from Bolivia, packed my belongings and around 1 pm I hit the road direction Valle del Elqui (valley of the Pisco grapes) into the mountains…

Eine Stunde später befand ich mich auf der Staumauer des Elqui und noch eine halbe Stunde später in Vicuña. Dort hatte es eingangs Dorf einen grossen Supermarkt und ich konnte mich mit allem eindecken, was mir fehlte. Danach ging es zur Plaza und ins Restaurante Halley, wo ich im Schatten einen doppelten Espresso und einen Jugo de Frutillas (Erdbeersaft, das hier in Chile sehr verbreitet ist!) trank. Übrigens: Hier herrschen wieder andere Temperaturen… bis zu 30 Grad am Tag!
Half an hour later I stood on the Elqui dam wall and another half an hour later I arrived at Vicuña. Entering the village I stocked up with everything that was lacking in a big supermarket. Thereafter I drove to the Plaza and had a double espresso as well as a jugo de frutillas (strawberry juice, a very common drink here in Chile!) in the shade of the Restaurante Halley. By the way, temperatures here are up to 30 centigrade at daytime!

Etwas später machte ich mich auf Richtung Pisco Elqui und fuhr erst auf Naturpisten zum Rio Magico… hier im Valle del Elqui muss scheinbar eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre in der Luft liegen, es wimmelt nur so von Reiki- , Zen- und wie diese Zentren alle heissen! Danach fuhr ich nach Pisco Elqui, das mir aber eher touristisch erschien, deshalb entschied ich mich nach Vicuña zurückzukehren, ein Hotel zu suchen und am Abend eine astronomische Exkursion ins Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca zu unternehmen…
A bit later I took the road to Pisco Elqui and first drove on dirt roads to Rio Magico… here in the Valle del Elqui there obviously must be a very special atmosphere as there are lots of Reiki-, Zen- and other centres all around! Thereafter I drove to Pisco Elqui which seemed quite touristic that’s why I decided to drive back to Vicuña, look for a hotel there and attend an astronomic excursion at the Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca tonight…

Auf dem Weg ins Zentrum von Vicuña hielt ich im Büro des um mich für den Abend anzumelden und um 18:30 Uhr checkte ich im Hotel Halley (http://www.turismohalley.cl) ein, ein wunderschönes Kolonialhaus mit Pool, abgeschlossenem Parkplatz und WiFi. Eine halbe Stunde später sass ich schon im Restaurante Club Social Elqui hinter einem riesigen Steak mit Pommes und Salat sowie einem herrlichen Rotwein!
Um 20:30 Uhr fuhr ich hinauf zum Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca und dort erwartete mich schon von weitem meinen Namen rufend Gonzalo, den Astronom, den ich beim Reservieren kennen gelernt hatte. Am Anfang des 2-stündiges Aufenthaltes fand eine Powerpoint Präsentation mit allgemeinen Informationen der Astronomie statt und dann führte mich Gonzalo an die verschiedenen Teleskope um bis in andere Galaxien hineinzublicken. Der Sternenhimmel ist schlickt umwerfend hier – nun verstehe ich weshalb es hier so viele Sternwarten gibt! Was ich auch interessant fand, ist dass man hier ganz andere Sterne sieht als in unserer Hemisphäre…
Zum Schluss lud Gonzalo mich noch zu einer Flasche Rotwein ein ins einzige Pub das um Mitternacht noch geöffnet war!

On the way into the centre of Vicuña I stopped at the office of the Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca to sign in for tonight and at 6:30 pm I checked in the Hotel Halley (http://www.turismohalley.cl), a pretty colonial house with swimming pool, locked parking area and WiFi. Half an hour later I sat behind a huge steak with French fries and salad as well as half a bottle of red wine in the Restaurante Club Social Elqui!
At 8:30 pm I drove up to the Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca where Gonzalo, the astronomer I got to know when signing up, was awaiting me calling my name from afar. The 2-hours excursion started with a power point presentation with basic information about astronomy and thereafter Gonzalo guided me through different telescopes to watch even into other galaxies. The sky here is simply stunning – now I understand why there are so many observatories! The other thing that amazed me was that I could see different stars than in our hemisphere…
At the end Gonzalo invited me for a bottle of wine in the only pub that was open at midnight!
