Heute Morgen war ich um 8 Uhr schon beim Frühstück, denn ich wollte um 9 Uhr abfahren, da ich nicht genau wusste wie lange ich für die 90 km zum Flughafen benötigen würde… die Strassen waren jedoch super und kein Verkehr, so dass ich mich kurz nach 10 Uhr schon im kleinen Flughafen Balmaceda befand. Kein Mensch war dort, weder bei den Autovermietungen noch an den Sky- und LAN-Schaltern. Der Parkwächter sagte mir, dass vor 12 Uhr niemand auftauchen würde… was nun? Ich wollte das Auto noch volltanken, aber ein Tankstelle gab es in Balmaceda auch nicht, so beschloss ich die 50 km nach Coyhaique zu fahren, dort aufzutanken und dann ‘pünktlich‘ im Flughafen zu erscheinen…
Um 12 Uhr war ich zurück im Flughafen Balmaceda und es schien endlich etwas los zu sein hier! Der Angestellte von Europcar wusste über mich Bescheid und fragte schlitzohrig ob alles gut gegangen sei mit meinen Pneus?! Zum Glück schon, und auch sonst ist ja eigentlich alles gut verlaufen während meiner im Ganzen über 8‘000 km Fahrt hier in Chile von Arica (der nördlichster Punkt) bis nach Puerto Rio Tranquilo (mein südlichster Punkt) mit vielen Abstechern ins Landesinnere!
This morning I sat at breakfast already at 8 am because I wanted to leave at around 9 am as I had no idea how long it would take to drive the 90 km to the airport… the streets were excellent and no traffic, so I arrived at the little airport of Balmaceda shortly after 10 am. There wasn’t anybody neither at the car rentals nor at the Sky- and LAN-desks. The park ward told me that there wouldn’t be anybody showing up before noon… and now? I intended to fuel the car but there neither was a gas station in Balmaceda, that’s why I decided to drive the 50 km to Coyhaique, fuel up there and appear at the airport later ‘on-time’…
I was back at the airport of Balmaceda at noon and it seemed that there was finally something going on! The employee of Europcar was informed about me and asked me impishly if everything went fine with my tyres?! Fortunately yes, and apart from that I had a wonderful drive of over 8’000 km total without problems here in Chile from Arica (the northernmost point) to Puerto Rio Tranquilo (my southernmost point) with lots of detours into the countryside!

Nun musste ich doch tatsächlich noch eine halbe Stunde warten, bis das Sky-Personal eintraf, das den Schalter für ihren Flug erst knapp eine Stunde vor Abflug öffnete. Es waren kaum Leute beim Einchecken und ich hatte wieder einmal Glück mit meinem Gepäck, das 39 statt der erlaubten 20 kg wog… das Flugzeug war eher leer als voll, so kam es auf mein Übergepäck nicht gross an und die Angestellte drückte ein Auge zu! ; ) Wir hoben um 13:30 Uhr ab und ich konnte einen wunderschönen Flug geniessen mit Sicht zuerst auf das chilenische und später auf das argentinische Patagonien! Pünktlich um 14:45 landeten wir in Punta Arenas und 20 Minuten später sass ich schon im Minibus Richtung Zentrum. Auch hier ist der Minibusservice wie schon am Flughafen Antofagasta super organisiert: Für wenig Geld wird jeder Passagier bei seinem Hotel abgeliefert!
Um 15:30 Uhr traf ich bereits beim äusserst hübschen Hostal del Centro (http://www.hostaldelcentro.cl/) ein und die sympathischen Sonia und José empfingen mich herzlich. Es wurde mir Tee gemacht und nach einem kurzen Schwatz wusste ich, dass heute um 17 Uhr ein Boot zur Insel Magdalena zu den Magellan-Pinguinkolonien fahren würde. Da dies wettertechnisch (übrigens herrschen hier zwischen 5 und 15 Grad Celsius!) nicht immer möglich ist, entschloss ich diese Tour gleich anzutreten. So befand ich mich nur wenige Minuten später in einem Taxi Richtung Hafen…
Now I had to wait another half an hour until the Sky stuff arrived who opened their desk only one hour before departure of the flight. There weren’t hardly any people checking in and I was lucky again with my luggage which weighed 39 instead of the allowed 20 kg… the airplane was rather empty than full and that’s why the employee turned a blind eye to my excess baggage! ; ) We took off at 1:30 pm and I enjoyed a fantastic flight with the view first of Chilean and then of Argentinean Patagonia! On-time at 2:45 pm we arrived at the airport of Punta Arenas and 20 minutes later I already sat in a minibus direction centre of town. Again here, as at the airport of Antofagasta, minibus services are organized perfectly: for little money each passenger is dropped off at his hotel!
Already at 3:30 pm I arrived at the utmost pretty Hostal del Centro (www.hostaldelcentro.cl) and I was cordially received by Sonia and José. After a short chat having hot tea I was informed that there was a boat going out to the colonies of the Magellanic penguins on the Isla Magdalena today at 5 pm. Because the tour only takes place only when weather permits (by the way, temperatures here are between 5 and 15 centigrade!) I decided to participate. Only minutes later I sat in a taxi heading the harbour…

Es befanden sich ziemlich viele Touristen auf der Melinka und wir liefen pünktlich um 17 Uhr aus. Die Fahrt durch die Magellanstrasse, die Feuerland vom Festland trennt, dauerte knapp 2 Stunden bis wir Isla Magdalena erreichten. Auf dem einstündigen Aufenthalt auf der Insel konnte man einen Spaziergang auf abgesteckten Wegen zum Leuchtturm unternehmen und tausende von nestenden Magellan-Pinguine beobachten.
There were quite a lot of tourists on the Melinka and we left the harbour on-time at 5 pm. The navigation through the Strait of Magellan, which cuts Tierra del Fuego from the mainland, took about 2 hours until we reached Isla Magdalena. On our one-hour stay on the island we could walk along marked-out paths to the lighthouse and observe thousands of nesting Magellanic penguins.

Kurz vor 22 Uhr liefen wir zurück im Hafen von Punta Arenas ein, es war noch stets hell, und wieder warteten Minibusse um die Passagiere ins Zentrum zu befördern. Ich schlenderte etwas durchs Zentrum und betrat schliesslich das originelle Restaurante La Luna um dort eine Chupe de Centolla (Seespinne) zu geniessen – einfach nur köstlich, das stellt sogar eine Languste in den Schatten!!!

Shortly before 10 pm we arrived back at the harbour of Punta Arenas, it still was bright, and again minibuses were waiting to carry the passengers to the centre. I took a short walk through the centre and finally entered the inventive Restaurante La Luna to enjoy a Chupe de Centolla (spider crab) – simply delicious, it even outclasses a lobster!!! (Cristián: You were right, and I am going to have another one tonight!)
