20.07.2011 Ecuador: Galapagos – Isla Santa Cruz

Nach einem schnellen Frühstück brachte uns der Shuttlebus um 7:30 zum Flughafen Guayaquil, wo wir für Galapagos eincheckten. Der Flug dauerte nur 1 ½ Stunden und wir erreichten die Insel Baltra, wo sich der Flughafen Galapagos befindet. Darwin, unser Reiseführer auf der MS Cachalote holte uns ab und wir machten schon Bekanntschaft mit den andern Gästen: Christof und Philipp aus Österreich, Sue, Alison, Mike, Kate, Andy, Judy, Alex und John aus Grossbritannien und Joe aus den USA. Die Hälfte davon wird wie wir 2 Wochen auf dem Schiff verbringen. Die meisten Passagiere sind Wissenschaftler: Biologen, Geologen, Astrophysiker, Ärzte sowie Pädagogen und Studenten.


After a quick breakfast we were brought to the airport of Guayaquil by the shuttle bus of the hotel, where we checked in for Galapagos. After a 1 1/2 hour flight we arrived at Baltra, the airport island of Galapagos. Darwin, our guide on MS Cachalote, awaited us and we got to know the rest of the guests: Christof und Philipp from Austria, Sue, Alison, Mike, Kate, Andy, Judy, Alex and John from the UK as well as Joe from the USA. Half of our group will spend 2 weeks on the boat like we do. Most of the passengers are scientists: biologists, geologists, astro-physicist, medicines as well as pedagogues and students.

Fähre nach Santa Cruz / Ferry to Santa Cruz

Ein Bus brachte uns zum Itabaca Kanal, den wir mit einer Fähre überquerten und so auf die Insel Santa Cruz gelangten. Dort wartete ein weiterer Bus, der uns ins Hochland fuhr, wo wir gleich als ersten Höhepunkt den Riesenschildkröten begegneten! Danach fuhren wir weiter nach Puerto Ayora und genossen ein super Mittagessen.

Zum Abschluss auf Santa Cruz stand ein Besuch in der Charles Darwin Station auf dem Programm, wo uns viele einheimischen Pflanzen und natürlich vieles über die Riesenschildkröten erklärt wurde. Um 18 Uhr schlenderten wir der Avenue Charles Darwin entlang zurück an die Anlegestelle, wo uns Darwin (unser Naturführer!) mit zwei Dinghies erwartete.

 A bus brought us to the Itabaca channel, which we crossed with a ferry and thus reached the island of Santa Cruz. Another bus awaited us there and we drove up to the highlands, where we met the first highlight of the Galapagos Islands: the giant tortoises! Thereafter we drove to Puerto Ayora and had a delicious lunch.

At the end of our visit on Santa Cruz we visited the Charles Darwin Station where we learned a lot about endemic plants and animals and got lots of information about the giant tortoises. At 6 pm we strolled along the Avenue Charles Darwin of Puerto Ayora back to the pier where Darwin (our guide!) awaited us with two dinghies.

Auf der MS Cachalote (http://cachalotegalapagos.com/) angekommen, wurden wir mit einem Drink an Bord willkommen geheissen, erhielten einige allgemeine Informationen und die 6-köpfige Crew stellte sich vor: Douglas der Kapitän, Richard im Service, Jose der Koch, Lennis der Mechaniker, Darcy und Miguel die Allrounder. Anschliessend wurde das Abendessen aufgetragen und wir assen an weiss gedeckten Tischen Pasta. Als alle sich die Bäuche vollgeschlagen hatten, wurden die Kabinen verteilt und los ging es sich einzurichten…

Da ich die letzten zwei Nächte sehr wenig geschlafen habe (je 5 Stunden) werde ich mich bald aufs Ohr legen, denn morgen geht es schon um 7 Uhr mit dem Frühstück wieder los…

When we arrived on MS Cachalote (http://cachalotegalapagos.com/) we were welcomed with a drink, Darwin informed us about our journey and the six members of the crew introduced themselves: Douglas the captain, Richard the waiter, Jose the cook, Lennis the mechanic, Darcy and Miguel the allrounders. We had lovely pasta for dinner and moved into our cabins with our full bellies…

I will be soon in bed as I haven’t slept a lot the last two nights (5 hours each) and breakfast will be at 7 am tomorrow…
