Puerto Lopez

Heute Morgen ging ich früh am Strand joggen und traf auf ein Volksfest: Es schien als wäre ganz Puerto Lopez auf den Beinen um die zurückkommenden Fischer zu begrüssen und bekochen. Natürlich konnte ich danach einem Bad im herrlichen Pazifik nicht widerstehen, wo Pelikane direkt neben mir in Scharen fischten!

This morning I went for a long nice run along the beach and run up to a public celebration of the fishermen coming back from the sea. It seemed as if whole Puerto Lopez was at the beach to welcome them and cook for them! After my run I couldn’t resist to go for a swim in the warm Pacific where pelicans were fishing just inches away from me!

Montañita

Nach dem Frühstück hatten wir nur noch eine kurze Strecke bis nach Salinas auf dem Programm. Wir starteten um den Mittag herum und machten bald darauf eine Pause in Montañita, einem Hippie-Dörfchen an der Westküste.

After breakfast we only had a short distance to drive to Salinas. We started around noon and made a stop in Montañita, a village of gipsy on the westcoast.

Da uns Salinas gar nicht gefiel, beschlossen wir direkt nach Guayaquil zu fahren, das Mietauto am Flughafen abzugeben und mit dem Shuttletransfer ins Grand Hotel zu fahren, wo Melanie und ich die erste Nacht in Ecuador verbracht hatten. Ich versuchte unterwegs mehrmals das Hotel von öffentlichen Telefonen aus anzurufen, kam aber nie durch. Wir wagten die Fahrt auf Risiko, fuhren voller Elan und auch mit überholter Geschwindigkeit los und tappten prompt in eine Radarfalle… die Polizei winkte uns heraus und erklärte, dass wir USD 100 (Tabelle wurde gezeigt!) Busse zu bezahlen hätten. Irgendwie wollte er aber den Bussenzettel einfach nicht ausfüllen, bis ich endlich merkte, dass er lieber ein Trinkgeld wollte – wir einigten uns auf die Hälfte... Vor Guayaquil, als wir nochmals volltankten, rief ein netter Herr mit seinem Mobiltelefon für uns im Hotel an. Stephanie vom Grand Hotel (http://www.grandhotelguayaquil.com/)bestätigte mir ein Zimmer sowie den Flughafentransfer!

Auch bei der Autovermietung am Flughafen klappte alles wie am Schnürchen (wir konnten das Auto einen Tag früher abgeben), wir wurden von einem Hotelbus abgeholt und im Grand Hotel abgesetzt. Stephanie und ich hatten zuvor per e-mail schon abgemacht, dass wir weitere Gepäckstücke mit warmen Kleidern, die wir auf Galapagos nicht benötigen würden, im Hotel lassen durften (wir werden ja am 3. August ankommend aus Galapagos nochmals eine Nacht hier verbringen!). Wir packten also um und liefen noch schnell an den Malecon um etwas essen zu gehen.

Salinas didn’t appeal to us at all, so we decided to drive directly to Guayaquil, return the rental car at the airport and drive by shuttle bus to the Grand Hotel, where Melanie and I had stayed the first night in Ecuador. I tried to call the hotel several times from public phones, but didn’t get through. At the end we took the risk to hit the gas to Guayaquil – unfortunately too fast and got caught by radar… the police stopped us and explained that we had to pay a USD 100 fine showing the list. The policemen hesitated too long to write the fine until I realized that he preferred a tip – we agreed on half of it! Just before we arrived in Guayaquil we filled the tank and a nice gentleman called the Grand Hotel (http://www.grandhotelguayaquil.com/) for me. Stephanie from the hotel confirmed a room as well as the airport transfer.

At the airport I could return the car 1 day earlier, the shuttle bus picked us up and dropped us off at the Grand Hotel. Stephanie had agreed beforehand by e-mail that we could leave some more stuff at the hotel, we wouldn’t need in Galapagos, as we will return for another night after Galapagos on August the 3^rd. So we repacked our luggage and went for a quick dinner on the Malecon.

Übrigens habe ich total 2600 km in diesen knappe 2 Wochen in Ecuador abgefahren!

Morgen fliegen wir für 2 Wochen nach Galapagos um auf der MS Cachalote Darwins Spuren zu folgen… soviel ich weiss, werden wir kaum Internet Zugriff haben - ihr müsst euch also bis zum 3. August mit einer Fortsetzung meines Reiseberichtes gedulden…

By the way: In total I drove 2600 km around Ecuador in almost 2 weeks!

Tomorrow morning we fly to Galapagos where we spend 2 week on MS Cachalote to follow Darwin’s steps… as far as I know we will scarcely have internet access – therefore please be patient until the follow-up of my story will appear on the 3^rd of August…
