17.+18.12.2011 Argentina: Ushuaia

Um 7 Uhr weckte mich die Stimme im Lautsprecher, dass das Frühstück serviert sei… oh weia -  ich hatte vergessen den Wecker zu stellen! Nun ging alles zack-zack und eine halbe Stunde später war alles fertig gepackt und ich im Speisesaal, wo meine Freunde schon warteten um Abschied zu nehmen : (

At 7 am the voice of the loudspeaker, who said that breakfast is served, woke me up… o gosh – I had forgotten to set my alarm clock! Now everything went very fast and half an hour later I had already had packed everything and was in the dining room where my friends awaited me to say goodbye : (

Ich liess mein Gepäck ins Büro der Australis in der Stadt bringen, lief durch den Zoll und wer erwartete mich dort freudig? – Guadelupe! Sie hatte mir zuvor geschrieben, dass sie arbeiten müsse und wir uns deshalb erst um 13 Uhr zum Mittagessen treffen würden – was für eine Überraschung! Wir setzten uns in ein Café um uns ein bisschen auszutauschen bis sie um 9 Uhr zur Arbeit ging. Ich lud inzwischen schon mal 2 Posts auf und ging danach auf Hotelsuche, bald darauf hatte ich mich im Hotel Cesar (http://www.hotelcesarhostal.com.ar) für 2 Nächte eingemietet. Das Hotel ist nur 2 Blocks vom Büro der Australis entfernt, so lief ich 2 Mal hin und her um mein Gepäck in mein neues Zuhause zu schaffen.

After having organized that my luggage was brought to the storage room at the office of Australis I walked through the customs, and who was awaiting me there joyfully? – Guadelupe! She had advised me that she would work that morning and therefore only be able to meet at 1 pm for lunch – what a surprise! We went for a coffee and a chat before she left for work at 9. In the meantime I uploaded 2 posts and went to investigate hotels thereafter. I rented a room for 2 nights at the Hotel Cesar (http://www.hotelcesarhostal.com.ar) which is only 2 blocks from the office of Australis, so I walked back and forth two times to bring all my suitcases into my new home.



Restaurante Almacen Ramos Generales, Ushuaia 


Um 13 Uhr holte ich Guadelupe in der Agencia de Turismo Rumbo Sur ab und wir liefen zum urgemütlichen Restaurante Almacen Ramos Generales um etwas zu essen. Da wir beide todmüde waren, stimmten wir beide einer Siesta zu und am Abend zu telefonieren um weitere Pläne zu machen… und genau das tat ich, aber ich konnte nicht lange schlafen, denn es plagte mich, dass ich mich noch nicht über Möglichkeiten von hier weiter zu reisen informiert hatte…

Um einen freien Kopf zu bekommen ging ich erst einmal der Küste entlang joggen, denn die Geschäfte waren erst ab 17 Uhr wieder offen. Auf dem Rückweg trat ich ins erste Reisebüro, das mir verkündete, dass alle Busse Richtung Norden voll seien und es erst am Mittwoch wieder freie Plätze hat! Die Angestellte gab mir aber weitere Adressen, wo ich mich erkunden konnte und das tat ich auch nach einer ausgiebigen Dusche. Nach den vielen Investigationen und unschlüssig, wie es weiter gehen sollte, kam ich todmüde ins Hotel zurück und war froh darüber, dass Guadelupe mir telefonisch mitteilte, dass sie sich auch so fühlte… so konnte ich an meinem Blog weiterarbeiten, all meine e-mails beantworten und relativ früh schlafen gehen!

Endlich habe ich wieder einmal genügend geschlafen und so fühlte ich mich dementsprechend fit! Ich ging zum Frühstück und nahm den Argentinien Reiseführer mit, hatte aber keinerlei Lust darin zu lesen… ich vermisse Chile und die liebenswerten Leute dort! Nach dem Frühstück genoss ich einen ruhigen Morgen mit einem herrlichen Bad und arbeitete weiter an meinen Blog – aber ich war mir immer noch nicht schlüssig ob ich per Bus nach El Calafate fahren würde oder für eine Woche zurück nach Santiago de Chile fliegen würde…

At 1 pm I picked up Guadelupe at the Agencia de Turismo Rumbo Sur and we walked to the cozy Restaurante Almacen Ramos Generales to have lunch. We both were very tired and agreed upon having a siesta and call later on to make plans… and that’s what I did but I wasn’t able to sleep long as it bothered me that I hadn’t informed myself about possibilities to continue my journey…

To get a clear head I first went to run along the coast, as the shops reopened at 5 pm only. On the way back I visited the first travel agency and I was told that all the buses direction north were fully booked until Wednesday! The employee gave me some more addresses where I could inform myself which I did after a nice shower. After lots of investigations and still indecisive how to continue on I came back to the hotel very tired and was happy when Guadelupe told me on the phone that she felt the same… so I worked on my blog, answered all my e-mails and went to sleep relatively early!

Yet again I slept enough last night and consequently felt fit this morning! I went to breakfast with my travel guide about Argentina but didn’t feel like reading in it… I miss Chile and the lovely people there! After breakfast I enjoyed a quiet morning with a wonderful hot bath and carried on working on my blog – but I still couldn’t make up my mind whether to drive to El Calafate by bus or fly to Santiago de Chile for a week…

Um 15 Uhr traf ich mich mit Guadelupe und ihre Freundin Meline am Hafen und wir gingen etwas trinken und sprachen über Argentinien… es war erschreckend, was die beiden mir zu erzählten hatten, vor allem Meline aus Buenos Aires über ihre Stadt! Normalerweise werde ich nicht so schnell eingeschüchtert, aber da schon Giulia (MV Via Australis) in Buenos Aires ausgeraubt wurde und ich eh auch nicht das allerbeste Gefühl habe seit ich in Argentinien angekommen bin (die Energien fliessen nicht mehr!), entschloss ich mich Montag via Buenos Aires für eine Woche zurück nach Santiago de Chile zu fliegen… Ich erhielt zudem ein e-mail von Cristian, dass er sich sehr freuen würde mit mir seinen Geburtstag (22.12.) und Weihnachten zu feiern!

Erleichtert darüber eine Entscheidung getroffen zu haben feierte ich es mit einer Centolla (Seespinne) und einer Flasche Chardonnay im Restaurante La Cantina Fueguina de Freddy, wo sich später auch Guadelupe und Meline dazugesellten.

At 3 pm I met Guadelupe and her friend Meline at the port and we went to have a drink and talked about Argentina... it was terrifying what they told me, especially Meline from Buenos Aires about her city! Usually I don’t get frightened easily, but as already Giulia (MV Via Australis) had been robbed in Buenos Aires and I rather had a bad feeling since I arrived in Argentina (my energies don’t flow here!), I decided to fly back to Santiago de Chile on Monday for a week… Besides I received an e-mail from Cristian that he would love to spend his birthday (22.12.) and Christmas with me!

Relieved about having made a decision I went to celebrate it with a centolla (king crab) and a bottle of chardonnay at the Restaurante La Cantina Fueguina de Freddy, where Guadelupe and Meline joined me later on.

Heute Morgen war ich um 5 Uhr schon wach – kein Wunder, es wird kaum dunkel hier am Kap Horn! Und es war auch weiter kein Problem, denn so konnte ich in aller Ruhe eine Dusche nehmen und mich für den ersten Ausflug zum Kap Horn um 7 Uhr bereitmachen… Wir hatten wieder Glück mit dem Wetter, denn es ist nicht immer möglich dort zu landen! Die Zodiaks luden uns ab und wir hatten eine Stunde Zeit im Wind zum Leuchtturm und dem Denkmal zu wandern. Auf Kap Horn wohnt eine Familie, die sich jeweils für ein Jahr verpflichtet und für die Kontrolle der Schiffe verantwortlich ist.

Als wir zurück an Bord waren, wurde das Frühstück serviert und danach hatte ich Zeit etwas nachzuschlafen… Vor dem Mittagessen traf ich mich mit Giulia und Francesco in der Sky Bar zu einem Cüpli. Und während dem Essen wurden wir von Delfinen und Walen begleitet! Nach einem weiteren üppigen Essen hatte ich Zeit zu verdauen, meine Posts zu schreiben und meine Koffer für morgen zu packen : (

This morning I woke up at 5 am – no wonder, it hardly gets dark here at the Cape Horn! But it was no problem, on the contrary, so I had time to take a shower and getting ready for our first excursion to the Cape Horn which started already at 7 am… Again we were lucky with the weather because it isn’t always possible to land here! The zodiacs drove us ashore and we had an hour time to walk to the lighthouse and the monument. There is always a family living on Cape Horn who commits to stay for one year and is responsible for the security of the passing ships.

When we arrived back on board breakfast was served and thereafter I took the chance to catch up with sleep… Before lunch I met Giulia and Francesco at the Sky Bar to have a glass of champagne. And while having lunch we were accompanied by dolphins and whales! After another exuberant meal I had time to digest, write my posts and pack my suitcases for tomorrow : (

Um 16:30 Uhr wurden wir von den Zodiaks zur Bahia Wulaia gefahren, wo bereits schon Darwin seinen Fuss auf die Erde setzte und die Gegend erkundete! Wir wanderten zwei Stunden im von Biber zerstörten Wald und genossen atemberaubende Aussichten auf die Bucht!

At 4:30 pm we were driven by the zodiacs to Bahia Wulaia, where already Darwin went ashore and made his investigations! We walked about 2 hours in a wood destroyed by beavers and enjoyed spectacular views of the bay!

Zurück an Bord genossen wir ein Cüpli bevor es um 20 Uhr zum Abendessen ging. Es war unser letzter Abend hier, das wir mit Centolla (Seespinne) und einem perfekten Rindfilet feierten. Danach gingen alles unsers Tisches in die Sky Bar und wir tobten uns zu Tom Jones aus! Kurz vor Mitternacht legten wir in Ushuaia, Argentinien, an und hatten die Gelegenheit an Land zu gehen… Francisco lud mich zu einem Kaffee ein und so lernte ich Ushuaia schon ein bisschen kennen!

Back on board we had a glass of champagne before we went to dinner at 8 pm. It was our last evening here which we celebrated with centolla (king crab) and a perfect tenderloin. Thereafter our entire table went up to the Sky Bar and we danced like wild to Tom Jones! Just before midnight we landed in Ushuaia, Argentina, and had the opportunity to go ashore… Francisco invited me for a coffee and so I got the chance to get to know Ushuaia already a bit!

15.12.2011 Chile: MV Via Australis – Glaciar Pía

Heute Morgen erwachte ich kurz vor 8 Uhr aus einem schönen Traum und draussen blitzte mir die Sonne und ein stahlblauer Himmel entgegen… das kann ja nur ein guter Tag werden! Um 8:30 Uhr ging ich zum Frühstück, hatte einen doppelten Espresso sowie viel Tee und Früchte. Das Essen an Bord der MV Via Australis ist übrigens schlicht der Hammer: Ein Buffet mit grosser Auswahl zum Frühstück und Mittagessen (die Desserts sind eine Sünde wert!) und am Abend wird ein 4-Gang Wahlmenu (Fleisch oder Fisch) serviert – immer mit anderem Weiss- und Rotwein!

This morning I woke up from a wonderful dream shortly before eight and outside bright sun and blue sky were glittering… there’s surely nothing going wrong today! At 8:30 am I had a double espresso, lots of tea and fruits for breakfast. The food on board of MV Via Australis is just absolutely delicious: there’s a buffet with a wide range for breakfast and lunch (the deserts are outstanding!) and for dinner a 4-course menu (meat or fish at choice) is served – always with different white and red wines!

Wir durchfuhren heute Morgen den Canal Ballenero und bogen kurz nach dem Frühstück in den Canal Beagle, der südlich von Feuerland entlang führt. Um 10:30 Uhr traf ich mich mit meinen Tischnachbarn in der Sky Bar für einen Espresso und ein Cüpli, danach ging es auf einen Besuch auf der Brücke mit ausführlichen Erklärungen (unter anderem, dass das Schiff ohne Autopilot fährt!). Das ist hier an Bord auch musterhaft: Alles ist für die Passagiere zugänglich und es werden jeden Tag vielerlei sehr informative und humorvolle Referate über Gletscher, Vögel, Ureinwohner und vieles mehr gehalten.

During the morning we crossed the Canal Ballenero and shortly after breakfast we turned into the Canal Beagle leading us along the south of Tierra del Fuego. At 10:30 am I met my new friends (sharing my table) at the Sky Bar for an espresso and a glass of champagne, thereafter we visited the bridge and were informed very precisely about the different jobs (and that the ship has no autopilot!). Everything here on board is accessible for the passengers and there are lots of different joyful presentations about glaciers, birds, indigenous and lots more – fantastic!

Um 12:30 Uhr wurde zum Mittagessen gerufen - wir assen alle wieder viel zu viel und hatten nur eine Stunde Siesta bis wir um 14:30 Uhr von den Zodiacs zum Gletscher Pía gefahren wurden. Dort sassen wir an der Sonne (bei 18 Grad C!) vor dem 1200 m breiten Gletscher und liessen uns von Paula über alles Wissenswerte informieren. Wir wanderten auf ein Aussichtsplateau hinauf um noch mehr Fotos zu schiessen und Francisco, ein Naturführer und Fotograf, fragte mich, ob ich für ihn posieren würde… natürlich setzte ich mich in Pose - ich habe es so ausführlich schon lange nicht mehr gemacht, aber es hat mir richtig Spass gemacht! Bevor wir zurück aufs Schiff gebracht wurden, wurde wieder Whisky auf Gletschereis serviert – diesmal an der Sonne… was für ein Leben!

At 12:30 pm we were asked to join for lunch – all of us ate too much once again and we only had about an hour for a siesta before the zodiacs drove us to the glacier Pía at 2:30 pm. There we sat in the sun (with 18 centigrade!) in front of the 1200 broad glacier and had ourselves informed by Paula about everything we wanted to know. We walked up to a viewpoint where we took more pictures and Francisco, a nature guide and photographer, asked me if I would pose for him… of course I did – I haven’t done it so excessively for a long time, but I had a lot of fun! Before we went back to the boat Whisky on glacier rocks was served – this time in the sun… what a life!

Zurück an Bord fuhren wir der Avenida de los glaciares entlang und jedes Mal wurde ein Aperitif passend zum Namen des Gletschers serviert, so gab es zum Beispiel beim Glaciar Francia Champagner und verschiedene Käsesorten!

Um 20 Uhr wurde ein weiteres köstliches Abendessen serviert und danach gesellte ich mich zu Francisco an die Reception um unsere Bilder zu bearbeiten…

Back on board we drove along the Avenida de los glaciares and passing each glacier we got served an appetizer according to its name, so for example we had champagne and different kinds of cheeses at the Glaciar Francia!

At 8 pm another delicious dinner was served and thereafter I joined Francisco at the reception to revise our pictures…

Um 7:30 Uhr heute Morgen ging mein Wecker und ein Blick aus meinem grossen Fenster verriet mir, dass wir uns tatsächlich mitten in Patagonien befanden! Nach einer heissen Dusche und Packen meines Rucksackes für die Morgenexkursion ging ich um 8:30 Uhr zum Frühstück. Eine halbe Stunde später befanden wir uns alle schon auf dem Oberdeck bereit für unsere erste Exkursion. Die Zodiaks brachten uns an Land der Ainsworth Bucht wo wir in Gruppen (nach Sprachen) 3 Stunden mit einem versierten Führer die Gegend abwanderten. Wir lernten vieles über die Natur hier und konnten auch See-Elefanten beobachten. Bevor es zurück aufs Schiff ging wurde heisse Schokolade mit Whisky ausgeschenkt!

My alarm clock woke me up at 7:30 am this morning and a look out of my window reminded me that I really was in midst of Patagonia! After a hot shower and packing my backpack for the morning excursion I went for breakfast at 8:30 am. Half an hour later we already gathered on upper deck ready for our first excursion. The zodiacs brought us ashore of Ainsworth Bay where we walked through the marvelous region for about 3 hours in groups of languages with a competent guide. We learnt a lot about nature here and even could observe see elephants. Before we went back aboard hot chocolate with whisky was served!

Zurück auf dem Schiff wurde kurz darauf um 13 Uhr das Mittagessen serviert und unsere neuen Freunde Giulia und Francesco aus Italien wechselten an unseren Tisch. Nach dem Essen war glücklicherweise genügend Zeit für eine Siesta, die ich natürlich nutzte, und um 16 Uhr stand eine Visite im Motorenraum auf dem Programm. Um 17:30 Uhr bestiegen wir wieder die Zodiaks und fuhren durch die Tucker Inseln um Magellan Pinguine, Imperial Kondore und weitere Vogelarten zu bestaunen.

Zurück an Bord genoss ich ein oder zwei Cüpli und bereitete meinen Post von gestern vor. Um 20 Uhr genossen wir wiederum ein wunderbares Abendessen und gesellten uns danach in die Sky Bar, wo eine Modeschau stattfand und ich an meinem Blog arbeiten konnte…

After lunch we luckily had enough time for a siesta, which of course I took advantage of, and at 4 pm we had the possibility to visit the engine room. At 5:30 the zodiacs were ready for a ride around the Tucker Islands to observe Magellan penguins, Imperial cormorants and more birds.

We were back on board for an appetizer and I had a glass of champagne or two whilst preparing my post of yesterday. At 8 pm another delicious dinner was served and thereafter we went to the Sky Bar to watch a fashion show and I finally found time to work on my blog…
