23.09.2011 Bolivia: Rurrenabaque – La Paz - Cochabamba

Mike & Andrea

Again I woke up early, not only because of the sounds of the animals, but another traveling day was ahead and moreover it was raining cats and dogs! At 8:30 am the rain stopped and I took the chance to go for a run along the river, have a double espresso at the Café de la Jungla and swim some rounds in the pool. As soon as I went out of the pool it started pouring with rain again and I went to the restaurant to have breakfast where Andrea and Mike joined me.
The day I spent with packing my suitcases and uploading new posts with lots of pictures… but with no stress at all!

Amaszonas, Rurrenabaque - La Paz

At 4:30 pm I said goodbye to the hotel staff and Manuel drove me to the office of Amaszonas where a bus brought me to the airport soon after. The rain had stopped and therefore our flight was sure to leave. After a short check-in procedure and when all 19 passengers were ready the bus drove us to the runway where we waited for the plane from La Paz. It arrived on time, some passengers disembarked and we took off soon after for La Paz where 2 hours later my flight with Aerosur at 8:45 pm left for Cochabamba. While waiting I picked up my stored suitcase (USD 22!!!) and uploaded the rest of my pictures…
The flight to Cochabamba took only 30 minutes and we received a sandwich when boarding the aircraft – that’s how to safe time! The first suitcases that arrived in Cochabamba were mine (or were it the only ones?) and so I was outside the terminal in minutes’ time and entered the taxi which dropped me at Violetta’s Apart Hotel (http://www.violettas.com/) 20 minutes after landing! Marilin had booked me a very nice room with a closed balcony in the 5th floor, I dropped my suitcases and went off around the corner to the Prado with it restaurants and bars. My choice was the Buenos Aires restaurant where they served superb tenderloin. The half bottle of Malbec made me sleepy and only a bit later I was back in my room and slept like an angel.

22.09.2011 Bolivia: Rurrenabaque

Again lots of different sounds of animals woke me up at dawn but I got up only at 8:30 am to go for a run along the river. I had a double espresso at the Café de la Jungla, had my boarding pass printed out for tomorrow in the office of Amaszonas and sat at breakfast in the hotel at 9:30 am. It was such a lovely and sunny day that I decided to spend it in and at the pool swimming and enjoying the sun…

After swimming some rounds I accommodated on my deckchair and investigated about the golf course Chocolatal (http://www.chocolatalgolf.com) in the jungle. In the meantime Juan Carlos brought me a coconut with a shot of whisky – the perfect digestive! As I hadn’t got an answer yet neither from the golf course nor from Thomas of Lipiko Tours I wasn’t in a hurry and took pictures with Juan Antonio of the hotel in various perspectives for his new website.

At 2 pm Thomas drove up to the hotel to bring me to the golf course. I got ready only in minutes and so had unexpectedly the chance to play 9 holes today! It was very hot and even more difficult playing in the jungle: the fairways were roughs and the greens semi-roughs! But I had fun playing with my 2 caddies Alejandro and Pasaquale (one carried my bag the other looked for my balls!) and used my golf shoes for the first time here in South America… ; ) On the website it was clearly stated that the golf course was still under construction and costs USD 11 to play 9 holes incl. the rental of the clubs, but Lipiko Tours charged BS 250 (=USD 37 incl. the 20-minutes drive and 2 small bottles of water) – sometimes I don’t understand the politics of prices!
In the evening I got to know the two new hotel guests Andrea and Mike from London who were on a trip around the world. We enjoyed together a delicious dinner and lots of interesting conversations. Thereafter I went through the new website of the hotel in Juan Antonio’s office – he asked me for my opinion and suggestions…

19. – 21.09.2011 Bolivia: Parque Nacional Madidi

Monday morning Juanita served another delicious breakfast and at 9 am I was ready for the tour into the jungle and the pampas. As half an hour later still no guide showed up, we tried to get hold of Javier by phone. But this was quite difficult, as we had no idea from which travel agency he was…  Finally we succeeded and found out that he was looking for me in the wrong hotel! Never mind, within 5 minutes another group would pick me up who just arrived at the airport.
unterwegs nach Santa Rosa del Yacuma / on the way to Santa Rosa del Yacuma

And so it was, at 10 am I got picked up by a 4x4 of Fluvial Tours and got to know Aissetou and Oriane from France as well as Ella, Elisabeth, Anna, Viescha, Miroslav und Babuschka (her name is quite difficult but sounds like this) from Poland. Off we went on a 3-hours drive to Santa Rosa del Yacuma where we had lunch at a restaurant.

We saw alligators, caimans, capybaras, turtles, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, pink river dolphins, hoatzins, cormorants, roseate spoonbills, southern caracaras, savanna hawks, toucans, flamingoes and many other species of birds…
Camp

unser Cabaña / our cabaña

At 5 pm we arrived at the camp and I accommodated a cabaña with Aissetou and Oriane – including a private bathroom! Soon after we were called for an aperitif and a little bit later we had a great dinner. After the meal we went on the high terrace to watch the sunset and subsequently went for boat trip by night to see hundreds of glooming eyes of alligators and caimans…

At 9:30 pm we all were in bed - deadbeat! I put some of the cotton Antonio gave me to fill my hollow tooth with while eating to dampen the noises of all the animals around us and to be able to sleep – what I really did and very well!

Sonnenaufgang / sunrise
Negro & Casimero

Tuesday morning we got up at 5 am to drive by boat to a place where we could see a wonderful sunrise. On the way back Negro stopped to introduce us to the alligator Casimero. Thereafter followed a delicious breakfast in the camp with pancakes and goodies I haven’t tasted before!

La Pampa

Oriane & Aissetou

Anaconda
Anaconda

At 8:30 am we started a 3-hours hike in the pampas looking for anacondas. When I tried to mark my territory wasps panicked and 5 of them stung me. Negro cooled it down with toothpaste. Unfortunately my boots had several holes so that I had to empty them all couple of meters! But finally all had its end and we found an anaconda!

Piranhas fischen / fishing for piranhas

Sonnenuntergan in den Pampas / sunset in the pampas

After lunch in the camp (our angels in the kitchen prepared another fantastic meal like always!) we went for a boat trip and fished piranhas which we had for dinner. On the way back to the camp we stopped at a jungle bar where we could watch a beautiful sunset, have sundowners and could play football and volleyball.
We had another delicious dinner in the camp and also that night we went to bed early – I slept very well again (with cotton in my ears)!

Schwimmen mit Delfinen / swimming with dolphins

Wednesday morning the indigenous greeted us very merrily – it was the beginning of spring and moreover the day of love! ; ) After a great breakfast in the camp we went by boat to look for the pink river dolphins to go swimming with them. The Yacuma is full of piranhas but those dolphins mark their territory and clear it from piranhas so that there is no danger at all to swim in the river!

bereit für die Rückreise / ready to go back

xxxFranziska

After a last delicious lunch in the camp we drove by boat down the river and reached Santa Rosa del Yacuam within 2 hours. There a 4x4 jeep was awaiting us and brought us back to Rurrenabaque on a 2 ½ hour’s drive on bumpy streets.
At 4:30 pm I arrived at the Hotel Isla de los Tucanes and was awaited cheerfully by Juan Antonio, Manuel, José and Clarissa! I went for a run along the Beni River, stopped at the Café de la Jungla to have a double espresso, informed myself about playing golf in the jungle and went for a swim in the pool. At 8 pm I was going to meet Aissetou and Oriane at the Mosskito Jungle Bar – Juan Antonio drove me there with the hotelbus as he thought I had been sportive enough today! ; ) It was a very nice evening which ended in the Monkey's Bar where we met amongst others the Polish!
