5.12.2011 Chile: Coyhaique – Puerto Rio Tranquilo

This morning I had to get up at 8 am, quickly prepared tea and made myself ready because at 8:45 am René arrived with his lorry and my poor Peugeot… we drove to Europcar, where César and Gustavo decided to give me another car for the rest of the three days and to send the Peugeot back to Antofagasta by ship and lorry. An hour later I already sat in a brand-new Chevrolet Cruze equipped with everything one can ask for, even a sunroof and the most important thing: new tyres with good profile!!! Europcar really delivered an excellent service, everything run smoothly!

Back at the El Mirador I picked up my suitcases and Juan gave me some advices what to visit in the region and what to leave. Thereafter I went back into town, had an espresso at the Restaurante Ricer, bought some supplies for on the way as well as my air ticket from Balmaceda (Coyhaique) to Punta Arenas next Thursday with Sky Airlines (with whom I had arrived in Antofagasta on the 30st of November from Lima).

At 2:30 pm I finally hit the road and drove along Ruta 7 direction south, first 100 km on asphalted streets and thereafter 120 km on dirt roads… actually I intended not to drive on dirt roads any more after my experiences, but Juan insisted me going to Puerto Rio Tranquilo and the profile of the new tyres looked reliable… and they luckily were! 5 hours later I reached the pretty village on the Lago General Carrera, the second biggest lake in South America after Lago Titicaca. At the Hostal Costanera (www.hostalcostanera.cl) I found a clean room and went right to have dinner in the cozy restaurant where I ordered my first wild salmon in Chile. After dinner I wanted to write for my blog and César, the owner, lent me his pendriver for the internet, but then Germán came over to my table, we started an interesting conversation and I left everything else for tomorrow…

4.12.2011 Chile: La Junta – Coyhaique

Oh mein Gott, so früh!!!

This morning a knock at the door woke me up at 9 am and I was told that the breakdown service was here! Oh my God, this early!!! I went down to meet René and told him that it would take some time until I will be ready for departure… No problem, he loaded my car up to his lorry, I had breakfast, and then I invited him for breakfast while I got ready… at 11 am the time had come!

We drove 100 km on dirt roads through national parks and René was the perfect guide who could name and explain just everything – unfortunately it was overcast and fortunately I didn’t have to drive this route myself! After 3 hours we reached the asphalted street and now it took another 170 km or 3 hours to Coyhaique which we arrived at 5 pm after totally 6 hours driving. René stopped at the Cabañas y Alojamiento El Mirador where I took a room from friendly Juan – and the view is great indeed! I said goodbye to René who will pick me up tomorrow at 9 am to bring me and poor little Peugeot to Europcar…

Immediately thereafter I took a walk through town and met Graziella who supplied me with valuable hints. I had an espresso at the really cozy Restaurante Ricon where I also enjoyed a delicious tenderloin with all the trimmings and wrote for my blog.

This morning when I went for breakfast two surprises were awaiting me: it was grey and rainy as well as my car had another flat tyre… Michel from France, who I got to know last night travelling with Christoph here in Patagonia, kindly helped to remove the faulty wheel and Carlos drove me to the next tyre vulcaniser to have it repaired. Whilst it got repaired we went shopping and I got to know almost every supermarket in Chaitén! After everything was arranged around noon I drove to the Don Baldo, which had arrived this morning from Puerto Montt, to see Rodrigo and Carlos. They invited me for lunch but I had to refuse because I intended to drive on direction south a bit earlier… : (

Was nun?

Now I drove 25 km on asphalted roads on the Carretera Austral and thereafter 120 km on dirt roads direction south. Everything went fine and I drove quite cautiously, nevertheless when I arrived at La Junta 3 hours later I had another flat tyre! To calm down my nerves I had a double espresso at the Mi Casita de Té and told Eliana about my bad luck… she immediately called around to look for a tyre vulcaniser. When I was there I bitterly had to notice that the tyre was ruined completely (obviously I hadn’t noticed it on the bumpy roads…) and my spare wheel lost air and was irreparable as well! And where do I go from here? – Luckily Eliana from Mi Casita de Té (http://micasitadete.surweb.cl/servicios.php) had told me that she lets rooms and anyway I liked her cozy restaurant at first sight! So I drove back to her, we called Europcar, who will bring me new tyres tomorrow, God willing, and I registered at her place…

Eliana & Mabel, Mi Casita de Té, La Junta

xxxFranziska

I was really happy here with a warm, clean and nice room, WiFi and a closed parking lot and even more with the cozy restaurant where I had a delicious dinner including a bottle of fine wine!

By the way, Brando and Bill are in Ushuaia today and will meet Guadelupe who I got to know in Bolivia on my Salar de Uyuni excursion… moreover Thijs, who I got to know at school in Sucre, wrote me that he is in Ushuaia tonight as well… maybe we will meet a few days later in La Calafate or Torres del Paine (Puerto Natales)?

2.12.2011 Chile: Chaitén

Strand von Chaitén / beach of Chaitén

This morning I woke up at 9 and first went for a run along the flat beach. The impact of the 2008 eruption of the volcano was clearly recognizable: the dark sand was mixed with grey ashes hiding remains of lots of trees! Because the Don Baldo still was anchored (it took off at 10 am to Puerto Montt) I visited Rodrigo and Carlos on the way back and had a good strong espresso! (Rodrigo: thanks for the nice coffee!) it was overcast and I felt quite tired from the long night so I had breakfast in no haste, wrote my post of yesterday and went through my e-mails.

Until I was ready for departure it was 3:30 pm and because it would take at least 3 hours on dirt roads until the next village I decided to stay another night, start a bit earlier tomorrow and visit the boys working on the new airport further north...

At 6 pm I was back at the Hospedaje Don Carlos and first took a snooze. Thereafter I walked through the village searching for a restaurant which was rather difficult in this deserted place as it seemed. But I was served a delicious merluza with mashed potatoes and a salad in the Restaurante Maria Estrella! After a glass of Chardonnay, which contains here 3 dl, I will surely call it an early night tonight...

Today a relaxing day was lying ahead due to my ferry leaving Quellón only at 4 pm and no driving for me today… so I took the advantage to write for my blog, answer my e-mails, revise my photos and investigate for the continuation of my journey direction south…

At 1 pm I went for a walk through town and amongst other things I bought my ticket for the 4-hours crossing by ferry in the Oficina Naviera Austral and had a good espresso and a fresh squeezed orange juice in the pretty Café Isla Sandwich.

At 3 pm embarkment started on the Don Baldo and once my car was tied up I enjoyed the sun at the upper deck until we departed with an hour delay. Thereafter time flew because I spent it mainly on the bridge with Rodrigo and Carlos having interesting and deep conversations…

At 9 pm we arrived at Chaitén, I said goodbye to my charming interlocutors and went to look for a hotel. The first on the way was the Hotel Schilling, where there was a jamboree going on but it was fully booked. The merry circle wanted to keep me there but I considered it as reasonable to find a room for the night first, so I took off to the Hospedaje Don Carlos where kind Carlos had a pretty room for me. A bit hungry I drove back to the Hotel Schilling because I thought it was a public restaurant too… as the farewell party for Felix (organized by his companions who are building the new airport – the former one had been extinguished by the eruption of Volcano Chaitén in 2008, as lots more here!) was private I got an invited and we celebrated, sang and danced until late in the night!

This morning I awoke at 9:30 am and because it was another bright day I plunged into my jogging outfit and went for a run along the coast. On the way back I stopped in a nice coffee shop to have a double espresso and maybe to awake entirely. Back at the hotel I pitched into the breakfast buffet and got ready for departure thereafter. I stowed everything in my car and quickly went for a walk through the little town before I took off to investigate the island at 1:30 pm.

unterwegs nach Quemchi, Isla de Chiloé / on the way to Quemchi, Isla de Chiloé

Quemchi, Isla de Chiloé

Quemchi, Isla de Chiloé

Iglesia de Quemchi, Isla de Chiloé

Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Dalcahue, Isla de Chiloé

Isla de Quinchao

Achao, Isla de Quinchao

Achao, Isla de Quinchao
Iglesia Santa Maria de Achao, Isla de Quinchao

Chiloé is a relatively flat island that’s why one can see the snowcapped Andes and volcanoes from almost everywhere – breathtaking! After an hours’ drive I reached Quemchi where people mainly live of salmon farms today. Here I took the first picture of a wooden church, which, by the way, all are built without a spike due to the lack of metal on the island! An hour later I was already in Dalcahue where there is huge wooden church and where I took the 5-minutes ferry to the Isle of Quinchao. At the end of this island is Achao situated of which one can enjoy a wonderful view when arriving. Back on Chiloé on the way to Quellón, where I intended to spend the night and inform myself about ferries to Chaitén, I passed Castro, the capital of the island, with lots of stilt houses – at the latest now one can recognize that wood reigns this island!

xxxFranziska

At 8 pm I arrived at Quellón and first drove along the Costanera to look for overnight accommodations. My information which I had found in the internet was confirmed by the office of the ferry: there is a ferry to Chaitén once a week which leaves tomorrow at 4 pm – perfect! Now there was nothing left but looking for a hotel with a cozy restaurant which I found in the Hotel Chico Leo (http://www.turismoquellon.cl/turismo/elchicoleo) with a terrific view of the bay and the mountains, WiFi and and enclosed parking lot. When checking in I got to know Sergio from Puerto Monnt and we lost in conversation so we decided to have dinner together in the packed restaurant… it became a very late night… (Sergio: Thank you very much for dinner and thie nice evening!)
