16.10.2011 Brazil: Fortaleza – Flecheiras

Wir hatten vor am Mittag Richtung Westen loszufahren und wollten deshalb den Morgen am Pool geniessen. Der  Wecker ging um 7:30 Uhr und kurz darauf befanden wir uns schon am Pool. Normalerweise war um diese Zeit schon viel Betrieb, da  um 7 Uhr das Frühstücksbuffet eröffnet wurde. Nicht so heute Morgen - kein Mensch beim Frühstück! Um 8 Uhr wurden die Türen geöffnet und die Leute strömten herein... Carlos hatte uns etwas von einer Zeitumstellung dieses Wochenende  in Sao Paulo erzählt, die aber nicht für Fortaleza gelten würde... Als ich sicherheitshalber beim Hotelpersonal  nachfragte, wurde mir dies bestätigt1 Plötzlich kam mir in den Sinn, dass die  Zeitzone meines iPhones auf Sao Paulo gerichtet war und die Zeitumstellung daher automatisch passiert war! So hatten wir einen langen Morgen und genügend Zeit ausgiebig zu frühstücken und uns für die Reise vorzubereiten!

We intended to hit the road towards west at noon and therefore wanted to relax on the pool in the morning. Our alarm clock went off at 7:30 am and soon after we were ready at the pool. Usually it is quite crowded at 7 am when the breakfast room opens. Not so today - nobody at breakfast this morning! At 8 am the doors opened and lots of people arrived for breakfast... Carlos mentioned something about time change in Sao Paulo this weekend but it wouldn't apply for Fortaleza... When I asked the hotel staff they confirmed so! Suddenly I became aware that my iPhone's time zone was set on Sao Paulo and a time change was made automatically! Never mind, like that we had a long morning and lots of time to have an extensive breakfast and make ourselves ready for our next journey!

Um 12 Uhr kam Cleo von der GRID Autovermietung, übergab uns einen kleinen Chevrolet für 4 Tage und los ging es Richtung Westen.

Um 16:30 Uhr kamen wir in Flecheiras an, das wir als erste Etappe erkoren hatten. Gleich am Ortseingang stach uns das hübsche Pousada do Paiva ins Auge, das wir näher ansehen gingen und etwas später bezogen wir eines der zweistöckigen Bungalows mit Meersicht!

We arrived at Flecheiras at 4:30 pm and spotted the pretty Pousada do Paiva entering the village. We went to examine it and soon after we moved in one of their two-story bungalows with view to the ocean!

Wir liefen der Strandpromenade entlang Richtung Dorf um die Restaurants dort auszukundschaften. Bald hatten wir die Wahl auf das wunderschöne Strandrestaurant des Hotel Orixas gefällt. Zuerst genossen wir aber einen Caipirinha (für BR 4=Fr. 2!) im Sand un d freuten uns über unser Glück!

We took a walk along the ocean front towards the village to investigate the restaurants for dinner. It didn't take long and we found the lovely beach restaurant of the Hotel Orixas. Before having dinner we had a Caipirinha (BR 4=Fr.2!) in the sand and enjoyed being so lucky!

Zum Abendessen genossen wir fantastische frische Scampi im Restaurant Orixas, zwar etwas früh für brasilianische Verhältnisse dafür hatten wir die ganze Aufmerksamkeit unseres Kellners Markus für uns und eine frühe Nacht!

For dinner we had delicious fresh king prawns at the Orixas restaurant, admittedly a bit early for Brazilian customs but like this we had the whole attention of Markus, our waiter, for us and an early night as well!

15.10.2011 Brazil: Fortaleza

Hotel Vila Galé, Fortaleza

Haben wir herrlich und lange geschlafen! Nach dem ausgedehnten Frühstück mit einer Riesenauswahl trafen wir Tiago, den Manager, der uns Vorschläge machte, was wir hier um Fortaleza alles sehen unternehmen könnten… wir entschieden uns ein Auto für 4 Tage zu mieten und der Küste entlang nach Westen zum ca. 300 km entfernten Jaricoacoara zu fahren. Tiago organisierte uns ein Mietauto für morgen und markierte auf der Landkarte die schönsten Strände, die es wert sind zu besuchen.

Ich ging im Bikini und barfuss dem langen Strand entlang joggen, dann schwimmen und gesellte mich zu Nadine auf einen Liegestuhl am Strand, wo wir den windigen und so nicht allzu heissen Nachmittag genossen! Hier herrschen übrigens Temperaturen von 35 Grad Celsius am Tag und 25 nachts - endlich Sommer!


What a long and restful sleep we had last night! After a huge breakfast at a great buffet we met Tiago, the manager, who made us suggestions what to do and see around Fortaleza… we went for renting a car for 4 days and driving along the west coast to Jericoacoara, about 300 km away. Tiago organized a car for us for tomorrow and marked the most beautiful beaches on the map worth making a stop.

I went for a run along the never ending beach barefoot in my bikini, went swimming thereafter and joined Nadine on a sun chair where we spent the windy and therefore not too hot afternoon. By the way, temperatures here are 35 centigrade at day and at night 25 – finally summer!

Am Abend machten wir uns im Poolrestaurant über das Buffet her und genossen den live Sänger, der mit seiner Gitarre und seiner super Stimme Musik aus der ganzen Welt spielte. So endete ein weiterer Tag im Paradies…

14.10.2011 Brazil: Sao Paulo - Fortaleza

Heute war wieder einmal ein Reise- und Packtag… so hatten wir vor und nach dem Frühstück alle Hände voll zu tun! Um 11:30 Uhr fuhren wir mit dem Taxi Richtung internationaler Flughafen und unser Chauffeur benutzte die Busspur, so kamen wir schnell vorwärts. Wieder fielen uns die vielen Motorräder auf, die schlängelnd an den Autos vorbeirasten – sehr gefährlich! Unterwegs brachten wir einen meiner Koffer zum Hotel Panamby, wo ich meine letzte Nacht in Brasilien verbringen werde, wenn Nadine zurück in die Schweiz fliegt.

Am Flughafen gaben wir unser Gepäck auf, stellten einen von Nadines Koffer bis zu ihrem Rückflug in die Schweiz ein, versuchten vergeblich unseren Belem-Sao Paulo-Rio Flug in einen direkten Flug umzuwandeln, wechselten noch etwas Geld und schon gingen wir an Bord unserer TAM Maschine, die pünktlich startete.


Today we had once more a travel and packing day… so we were very busy before and after breakfast! At 11:30 am we drove to the international airport by taxi and our driver used the bus lane, so we advanced fast. Again the loads of motorcycles racing around the cars caught our eyes – very dangerous! On the way I dropped off one suitcase in the hotel Panamby where I will spend my last night here in Brazil when Nadine will fly back to Switzerland.

Arrived at the airport we dropped off our luggage, stored one of Nadine’s suitcases which she will pick up before returning to Switzerland, tried to convert our flight Belem-Sao Paulo-Rio in vain into a direct flight, changed some money and then it was already time to board our TAM machine which took off on-time.

4 Stunden später um 18:30 Uhr kamen wir in Fortaleza an, holten unser Gepäck und fuhren mit einem Taxi ins Hotel Vila Galé (www.vilagale.com.br). Dort wussten sie nichts von unserer Reservation (haben wir auch erst gestern per e-bookers.ch gemacht!), so beschlossen wir im Strandrestaurant über das herrliche Buffet herzufallen, bis unsere Buchung geklärt wurde… Das Hotel war ausgebucht und wir erhielten ein sehr hübsches Zimmer aber mit Aussicht auf eine Wand - was soll es, wir sind eh den ganzen Tag draussen und können uns nicht beklagen, da wir mit e-bookers die Hälfte des regulären Preises bezahlt haben!

Da es noch früh war, setzten wir uns an die Poolbar, wo uns Santiago aus Porto, Portugal, bediente. Unsere Fragen konnte er nicht beantworten, weil er erst 4 Tage hier im Hotel arbeitet, dafür hat er uns kompetente Hilfe geholt, Tiago, den Manager persönlich! Tiago ist ein absolut netter und hilfsbereiter Mann und bot uns an unser Zimmer morgen zu wechseln… Mit positiven Gedanken gingen wir zu Bett und schliefen nach langen Gesprächen selig ein!

4 hours later at 6:30 pm we arrived at Fortaleza, picked up our luggage and drove by taxi to the hotel Vila Galé (www.vilagale.com.br).There they didn’t know anything about our reservation (we only booked yesterday with e-bookers.ch), so we decided to fall over the dinner buffet in the beach restaurant meanwhile… The hotel was fully booked and we got a very nice room but with view to a wall – never mind, we will be outside the whole day and cannot complain as we paid only half price with e-bookers!

As it was way too early to hit the sack we went to the pool bar where Santiago from Porto, Portugal, served us. He wasn’t able to answer our questions because he worked at the hotel only since 4 days but instead he brought us a competent help, Tiago, the manager! Tiago is a very nice and helpful man who offered us to change our room tomorrow… With positive thoughts we went to bed and fell asleep blissfully after chatting a while!

12.+13.10.2011 Brazil: Sao Paulo

Diese Nacht schliefen wir beide gut und viel! Gut ausgeruht begaben wir uns kurz vor 10 Uhr zum Frühstücksbuffet, wieder eines mit einer grossen Auswahl. Anschliessend machte ich mich joggend auf den Weg zum Jockey Club, wo Carlos Fussball spielte, während Nadine im Internet nach Flügen suchte, die unserem Reiseplan vom Vorabend entsprachen.

We slept well and long last night! Well rested we went to have breakfast just before 10 am where another big buffet with lots to chose was awaiting us. Thereafter I went jogging to the Jockey Club, where Carlos played soccer while Nadine searched flights in the internet according to your plan of last night.

Mit dem Stadtplan in der Hand joggte ich durch die Stadt und fand den Jockey Club und die fussballspielenden Männer auf Anhieb! Während ich einen Augenblick zusah und zwischendurch mit Cadu unsere Pläne für den Nachmittag besprach machte ich meine Stretchübungen und rannte danach zurück ins Hotel. Dort angekommen schwamm ich noch einige Runden im Pool und ging anschliessend in unser Appartement im 10. Stock um nachzusehen, was Nadine alles herausgefunden hatte. Sie hatte sich nochmals über das Wetter informiert und Iguazu aus Schlechtwettergründen im Süden von unserem Plan  gestrichen (Doris: Nun können wir das zusammen planen!). Nun werden wir hier in Brasilien Fortaleza, Belem und Rio anfliegen – juppiii!

With the city map in my hand I jogged through the city and found the Jockey Club and the soccer playing men at once! While stretching I watched the game for a while and made plans for the afternoon with Cadu and thereafter returned to the hotel. Back there I swam some rounds and went up to our apartment in the 10^th floor to see what Nadine had found out in the meantime. Due to bad weather forecasts in the South she cancelled Iguazu from our programme, but I will have another chance to visit the falls when I’m in Argentina in January. Now here in Brazil we will fly to Forteleza, Belem and Rio– yeahhh!

Da es ziemlich bewölkt war, setzte uns Cadu am Nachmittag im Shopping Center Eldorado ab… ein wirkliches Eldorado, das zum Glück auch Rollkoffer verkaufte um unsere Waren zu transportieren (Brige: New York lässt grüssen!)! Ein Taxi brachte uns zurück, wir öffneten unsere Flasche Champagner, den Käse und hatten Erdbeeren zum Apero und machten uns bereit fürs Abendessen. Wir gingen ins Jardiniera Grill (www.jardineiragrill.com.br) um die Ecke und was uns dort erwartete, war unglaublich – zum Glück haben wir nichts zu Mittag gegessen: Ein Buffet mit allem, was man sich nur vorstellen kann, aber wir kamen gar nicht dazu, da alle halbe Minute jemand mit frisch gebratenen Scampi, Fisch und Fleisch vorbeikam! Endlich begriffen wir, dass wir unsere grüne Plakette auf Rot kehren mussten, damit die Kellner an uns vorbei gehen würden und wir auch einmal Zeit hatten das Buffet auszukundschaften… ; )

Um 22:30 Uhr holte uns Carlos ab um in den Bourbon Street Club zu gehen… leider war er heute geschlossen (Feiertag?) und wir setzten uns in eine andere Bar-Restaurant und genossen ein köstliches Passionsfruchtsorbet… Morgen ist Bourbon Street vielleicht geöffnet?

Am Donnerstag Morgen war ich schon früh wach und ich setzte mich an den Laptop um Hotels für unserer Reise in Brasilien zu finden und buchen. Da es regnete verbrachten wir den ganzen Morgen nach dem Frühstück im Internet surfend in unserem Appartement.

It was overcast, so Cadu drove us to the shopping centre Eldorado in the afternoon… a real Eldorado, luckily they sold trolleys to transport our stuff! A taxi brought us back to the hotel where we opened our bottle of champagne, the cheese and had strawberries for aperitif while getting ready for dinner. We went to the Jardiniera Grill (www.jardineiragrill.com.br) around the corner and couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw what was going on there – fortunately we didn’t have anything for lunch today: A buffet with about everything you can imagine but we didn’t get the chance to go there because every half a minute a waiter passed with freshly grilled seafood, fish and meat! Finally we understood the system and we turned our green cards around so they showed a red face and the waiters didn’t stop at our tables and consequently we had the chance to check out the buffet… ; )

At 10:30 pm Carlos picked us up to go the Bourbon Street Club… unfortunately it was closed (due to a national holiday?) and we had a delicious passion fruit sorbet at another bar-restaurant instead… Maybe Bourbon Street will be open tomorrow?

Thursday morning I woke up and went to investigate hotels in the internet for our voyage in Brazil. It was raining, so we spent the whole morning after breakfast in our apartment surfing in the internet.

Am Mittag holte uns Carlos ab und brachte uns ins Zentrum, von wo wir langsam im Regen und Schutz vor der Nässe suchend zum Hotel zurückliefen. Dort hatte ich endlich Zeit meine e-mails und an meinem Blog zu schreiben sowie für einen Powernap – eine gute Idee, wie sich später herausstellte!

In the afternoon Carlos drove us to the city centre from where we slowly walked back to the hotel in and hiding from the rain. Back in the hotel I finally had time to answer my e-mails and writing for my blog as well as having a power nap – a very good idea I found out later on!

Um 20:30 Uhr holte Cadu uns ab und führte mich in die Mata Strasse um eine Postkarte vom Galapagos Hand-Deliver Post Office abzugeben. Leider war niemand da, so dass ich die Karte dem Portier übergab (am nächsten Morgen erhielt ich schon eine Dankensnachricht per e-mail!). Danach fuhren wir zum Restaurant Varanda Grill (www.varandagrill.com.br) um mir meinen Wunsch nach dem besten Rindsfilet von Brasilien zu erfüllen (Cadu war einer der Mitbegründer des Restaurants). Sein Freund und der Besitzer Silvio setzte sich zu uns an den Tisch für den Abend, bestellte eine hervorragende Flasche brasilianischen Rotwein (sogar Nadine trank ein Glas!) und fragte uns nach unseren Essenswünschen… im Nu wurden wir von drei Kellnern bedient und genossen ein ausgezeichnetes Essen! Beim Verlassen zeigte uns Silvio stolz seine Auszeichnungen – die letzten 2 Jahre wurde das Varanda Grill als bestes Fleischrestaurant Brasiliens ausgezeichnet!!!

At 8:30 pm Cadu picked us up and drove me to Mata Street to drop off a postcard from Galapagos of the hand delivery post office there. Unfortunately nobody answered so I handed he postcard to the porter (next morning I received an e-mail saying thank you!). Thereafter we drove to the restaurant Varanda Grill (www.varandagrill.com.br) to fulfill my wish to have the best tenderloin of Brazil (Cadu was one of the founders of the restaurant). His friend and the owner Silvio joined our table for the evening, ordered a very good Brazilian red wine (even Nadine drank a glass!) and asked us what we would like to eat… in no time we were served by three waiters and enjoyed an excellent meal! When leaving Silvio proudly showed us his awards – the last two years it was rated the best meat restaurant in Brazil!!!

Zum Schluss ging es endlich zum lange versprochenen Bourbon Street Club (www.bourbonstreet.com.br), wo, als wir um 23:30 Uhr ankamen, ein Jazz Konzert in artgerechtem Ambiente begann… es war ein super Abend mit guter Musik und wir haben sogar getanzt…

At the end we went to the long promised Bourbon Street Club (www.bourbonstreet.com.br), where a jazz concert in a very nice atmosphere started at 11:30 pm just when we arrived … it was a great evening listening to good music and dancing…

11.10.2011 Peru: Lima – Brazil: Sao Paulo

Heute mussten wir wieder einmal früh aufstehen, denn um 7 Uhr wurden wir bereits von unserem Taxichauffeur abgeholt, der uns zum Flughafen führte… Unser Flug ging erst um 10:15 Uhr (pünktlich), so hatten wir wieder einmal genügend Zeit fürs Duty Free Shopping!

Today we had to get up early once again because we were picked up at 7 am by our taxi driver to bring us to the airport… Our flight was only at 10:15 am (on-time) consequently we had enough time to shop duty free!

Um 17 Uhr landeten wir in Sao Paulo, Brasilien, und 20 Minuten später empfing uns schon Carlos. Zum Glück hatte er ein grosses Auto dabei, einen Hyundai Azera V6, dessen Motor man überhaupt nicht hört und der genug Stauraum für unser vieles Gepäck hatte! Natürlich herrschte stockender Abendverkehr, so dass wir satte 2 Stunden benötigten bis wir im Hotel Quality Suites Vila Olimpia (http://www.atlanticahotels.com.br/atlantica/hoteis/estrutura.asp?Numfuncionalidade=292&NumHotel=56) ankamen… dafür erwartete uns eine Überraschung in unserem hübschen Appartement: Cadu hatte den Kühlschrank in der Küche mit Getränken (u.a. Champagner und alles Nötige für einen Caipirinha), Käse und Früchten gefüllt! Er bereitete uns den ersten Caipirinha zum Apero zu und wir entschieden uns das Abendessen hier im Hotelrestaurant ‘Don Pepe de Napoli‘ einzunehmen und unseren Reiseplan zu schmieden…

Übrigens: Endlich haben wir wieder normale Temperaturen tagsüber 25 und nachts 20 Grad Celsius!

At 17 pm we arrived at Sao Paulo, Brazil, and 20 minutes later we were welcomed by Carlos. Luckily he had a big car with him, a Hyundai Azera V6 with a motor you don’t hear at all and a trunk big enough to transport our entire luggage! Of course the evening traffic was stop and go and it took us 2 hours to get to the Hotel Quality Suites Vila Olimpia (http://www.atlanticahotels.com.br/atlantica/hoteis/estrutura.asp?Numfuncionalidade=292&NumHotel=56)... but there was a nice surprise in our pretty apartment: Cadu had already filled our fridge in the kitchen with drinks (among others champagne and all the ingredients you need for a caipirinha) as well as cheese and fruits! He prepared our first caipirinha as an aperitif and we decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant ‘Don Pepe di Napoli’ and plan our itinerary in Brazil…

By the way: Finally we have normal temperatures at daytime around 25 and at night around 20 centigrade!

10.10.2011 Peru: Cuzco - Lima

Schon um 7:30 Uhr waren wir beim Frühstück und eine halbe Stunde später fuhren wir mit einem Taxi zum Flughafen. Der 1 Stunde 20 Minuten Flug nach Lima war pünklich und wir kamen gleichzeitig mit Bea an, die eine Woche in, Iquito, dem Amazonas-Gebiet Perus, verbracht hatte. Ricardo, unser Chauffeur, erwartete uns schon und fuhr uns nach Miraflores. Im Hotel Colon (www.miraflorescolonhotel.com) richteten wir uns kurz in unserem Zimmer im 8. Stock ein und los ging’s weiter shoppen! Viel Energie hatten wir nicht und das meiste bereits in Cuzco eingekauft, so dass wir um 16 Uhr schon wieder in unserem Zimmer am packen für unseren morgigen Flug nach Sao Paulo waren… Ich rannte noch ein Mal dem Malecon entlang und dann war es schon Zeit uns fürs Abendessen im Rosa Nautica bereit zu machen… Nun hatten wir noch eine halbe Stunde Zeit, die wir in den Geschäften im Larco Mar verbrachten und Nadine fand doch prompt noch mehr Alpaca Wollsachen!

We were at breakfast already at 7:30 am and half an hour later we drove to the airport by taxi. The 1 hour 20 minutes flight was on time and we arrived at Lima the same time like Bea who had spent a week in Iquito, Amazonia of Peru. Ricardo our driver already awaited us and drove us to Miraflores.  We installed in our room in the Hotel Colon  (www.miraflorescolonhotel.com) and off we went for some more shopping! We didn’t have spare energy left and already had bought about everything in Cuzco, that’s why we were back in the hotel at 4 pm packing our suitcases for the flight to Sao Paulo tomorrow… I went for a last run along the Malecon and when I came back it was already time to get ready for our dinner at the Rosa Nautica. Now we had time to walk through the shops of Larco Mar once more and Nadine promptly found some more alpaca goods!

Um 20 setzte uns ein Taxi im Rosa Nautica ab, wo ich schon vor zwei Monaten mit Melanie und Hansruedi unseren letzten Abend in Lima verbracht hatte. Da Bea erst um 21 Uhr von einem Meeting eintreffen würde, setzten wir uns in die gemütliche Bar. Mit Bea genossen wir ein super feines Abendessen, mussten auch von ihr Abschied nehmen : ( und waren um 23 Uhr zurück im Hotel um unseren 6-stündigen Schlaf anzutreten…

At 8 pm a taxi dropped us off at the Rosa Nautica where I already had spent my last evening in Lima with Melanie and Hansruedi two month ago. Due to Bea’s late meeting we first went to the cosy bar and enjoyed a delicious dinner one hour later. We had to say goodbye to Bea : ( and arrived at the hotel around 11 pm where we started our 6-hours sleep soon after…

09.10.2011 Peru: Cuzco

Vor dem Frühstück ging ich heute meine gewohnte Strecke hier in Cuzco joggen und anschliessend ins Barista zu Palmira und Jaime um den besten Espresso in Peru zu geniessen und meine Fotos vom Dienstag auf ihren PC zu kopieren. Als ich ins Hotel zurückkam, sass Nadine schon beim Frühstück und wir genossen ein langes, gemütliches Essen mit vielen frischen Früchten, Fruchtsäften und herrlichen einheimischen Brötchen…

Am Nachmittag checkten wir per Web ein, brachten nochmals Wäsche in die Wäscherei und ich schrieb an meinem Blog während Nadine eine Stadttour mit Melissa machte.

Before breakfast I went for a run on my habitual circuit here in Cuzco and thereafter to the Barista to have the best espresso of Peru at Palmira & Jaime’s coffee shop and to copy my pictures of Tuesday onto their computer. When I came back to the hotel Nadine already sat at breakfast and we enjoyed a long meal with lots of fresh fruits, fruit juices and delicious indigenous bread…

The afternoon I spent mainly in the internet doing our web check-in and writing for my blog. We went to the laundry once more and Nadine had a private city tour with Melissa.

Melissa, Nadine & Flavia in Restaurant ChiCha, Cuzco

Am Abend hatten wir uns in der La Bodega 138 verabredet um Fotos vom Lokal zu schiessen und anschliessend in eines der besten Restaurants in Cuzco, dem ChiCha, zu Abend zu essen… wir genossen einen wunderschönen Abend und verabschiedeten uns danach von Melissa und Flavia… : (

Als wir ins Hotel zurückkehrten, war unsere Wäsche  packbereit an der Reception und wir stiegen todmüde ins Körbchen!

In the evening we had an appointment with Melissa and Flavia at the La Bodega 138 for a photo shooting and thereafter we went for dinner to one of the best restaurants in Cuzco, the ChiCha… we had a wonderful evening and finally had to say goodbye to Melissa and Flavia…

When we came back to the hotel our laundry was ready to pack and we crawled into our beds very, very tired!
