Wednesday morning the alarm went off at 4 am… an hour later we had breakfast (which is no problem if there are lots of fruits to chose from!) then were picked up by Leo (tour guide), Luis (cook), Ronny (driver) and Evelin, the representative of Wonderland Tours (www.cuscowonderlandtour.com), and drove direction Soraypampa.

We arrived at Soraypampa (4000 m) at 9:30 am where Alberto and his 3 mules awaited us. We transported our luggage from the bus onto the animals and half an hour later we started our 6-hours’ trekking around the Salkantay (6264 m). We crossed the 4600 m pass of Abra Salkantay; it was freezing cold and snowed, in return we spotted lots of Viscachas (Chinchillas)! ; )

Luis, our super cook, prepared lunch in a tent in Huayracmachay and it started to rain… with our rain coats we walked down to 2800 m and reached our Camp in Andenis Rayaniyoc at dusk. We felt happy to find ourselves in a tropic climate! Luis and Alberto had already set up our tent, so all that was left for us to do was installing our stuff and sit on a table ready laid! While having dinner we heard an avalanche thundering down… Unfortunately our rented inflatable mattresses didn’t work (Evelin paid us the money back at the end of our trip!) but our hot water bottles did!

Thursday morning Alberto woke us up at 7:30 am with two cups of Mate de Coca. After breakfast at 9 am we started our 5-hours’ walk deeper and deeper into the tropics. We met Luis and Alberto in Winaypoqo for lunch. From there Alberto walked back to Soraypampa where we started our trekking a day ago. Nadine decided to drive to Playa with Luis by microbus and poor Leo had to walk the remaining 1 ½ hour to Playa with me.

Arrived at the camp I first had a hot shower. Thereafter it started to rain and we spent the rest of the day in the kitchen having an aperitif, dinner and listened to music…

Hidroelectrica

Hidroelectrica

Friday morning we woke up quite early and arranged our humid stuff. After breakfast (again in the kitchen) we drove to Santa Teresa by microbus and relaxed in the hot springs for a full hour… an unbeatable feeling! Due to landslides on the road to Hidroelectrica traffic was not able to pass before noon. When we arrived there the huge rock barricading the road wasn’t blown up yet and we couldn’t pass. Clever Luis was already preparing lunch which we had before passing the rock with our luggage on foot to the taxis which drove to Hidroelectrica. From there we went by train to Aguas Calientes…

Hotel La Payacha, Aguas Calientes

Saturday we had breakfast at the hotel and at 8:30 am we drove by bus to Machu Picchu … into a heavy fog! We hardly could see something and it was that humid that we didn’t stay long: We broke off Leo’s tour, took advantage of the short light moments to take pictures and drove down to Aguas Calientes around noon – directly to Toto’s House where we had lunch.

I woke up early that morning and so I went for a run and a double espresso at Palmira’s and Jaime’s Barista… it’s such a lovely place and the best coffee I had up to now in Peru that I had to tell her that it was a pity that one doesn’t see how it looks like upstairs from the street…

Pulli und Schmuck / jumper and jewellery

After breakfast we had the briefing concerning our trekking with Leo, our tour guide of Wonderland Tours (www.cuscowonderlandtour.com). Now we knew what we had do pack: A backpack and the rest went into a big baffle bag which a mule will carry for us – it seemed to me as we were packing all the time! As we needed some good hiking socks, wine and snacks we went shopping again. Of course there are lots of other shops in Cuzco as well, so that Nadine bought herself beautiful jewellery and I got myself an Alpaca jumper!

In the afternoon we went back to the Barista with my camera and had a fotoshooting: I arranged and took pictures and Nadine was my model and muse.
At 4 pm I had an appointment with my dentist and had to wait for half an hour because there were lots of people waiting. I had another 30-minutes’ preparation and to return at 6:30 pm to have the bell glass component inserted. I appeared on time, had another treatment of 45 minutes and left Dr. Rosell Pinto Pazos relieved with a new tooth and parted from 550 Soles (=USD  200!)! Nadine enjoyed a reflexology in the meantime… ; )
Our laundry was ready to pick up and pack, later we had a delicious dinner at the Restaurant Sara…

03.10.2011 Peru: Lima – Cuzco

Lima - Cuzco

At 4.45 am the alarm clock woke us, up at 5.30 am we had breakfast and at 5.50 am Ricardo drove us to the airport – zackzack! We had already checked in via web, so we only had to drop off our baggage and thereafter we queued for a long time to have our hand luggage scanned. We had just enough time to go through the duty free shops and shortly after we already sat in the plane of StarPeru which took off on time at 8:20 am and arrived at Cuzco at 9:40 am. We got picked up by the shuttle bus of the Hotel Ruinas ((http://www.hotelruinas.com) and at 10 am we already moved into our room!
Nadine & Melissa

As suggested, we had a mate of coca and relaxed for a while to acclimatize, since we had travelled from 0 to 3340 m above sea level! At noon Nadine’s friend Melissa and her cousin visited us at the hotel (Nadine got to know Melissa and her cousin Bea 20 years ago in Cannes while studying French).

Thereafter we went to conquer the town but didn’t move really as we stepped into each shop… A kind of hunger drifted us finally to the restaurant Papillon at the Plaza de Armas where we had lunch.

beim Zahnarzt / at the dentist Dr. Rosell Pinto Pazos

My tongue hurt as it rubbed on my sharp tooth, so we went to look for a dentist who we found quickly: Dr. Rosell Pinto Pazos, he surveyed my hollow crater and made prints for a bell glass part that he will insert tomorrow… Thereafter we recuperated from our exertions with a one-hour-whole-body-massage for unbelievable 25 Soles (= USD 10)!

Restaurant Cosa Nostra, Cuzco, with Flavia, Nadine & Melissa

We woke up early and the first picture that occurred before my eyes was the hand grabbing through the smashed window… I decided to run myself free along the Malecon, having a double espresso while stretching and came back to the hotel full of energy, where Nadine awaited me for breakfast. I toasted two cheese-tomato sandwiches but forgot about them, so that I had to scratch off the black layer! When I took the first bite I felt something very hard between my teeth, it could impossibly be the burnt toast… it was a piece of my hollowed tooth!

We spent the morning with washing and scrubbing ourselves clean from the bad experience of the day before and I enjoyed our wonderful whirl tub! At 2 pm Bea picked us up at the hotel and a blue sky awaited us – totally uncommon for grey Lima. We postponed our plan to visit the historic city to tomorrow and walked along the Malecon to the Parque de Amor. Nadine spontaneously went for a paraglide tandem flight – fantastic, also for the ones who watched!

Juan, & Miguel, the Besso twins

Thereafter we went shopping, Nadine had to replace what had got stolen… we had time to have a late lunch in a café at the sun before Bea brought us to the Bessó Salon, where we got hair-technically treated!

xxxFranziska & Nadine

Once a year the Wine Exposition takes place in Barranco, a quarter next to Miraflores, and that was where we wanted to meet Bea and her friends. We drove there by taxi but were unable to reach Bea by phone and it was impossible to find her in the big mass of people! As hunger struck us we sat down in a restaurant and ordered some food, the wine we got from the degustation stands. That’s how we got to know Alec and Andrés with whom we spent an amusing evening and who dropped us at the hotel later.

Sunday was a quiet day starting with a good and an unhurried breakfast. After midday Nadine went with Bea to the historic centre and I settled business with Petronio – furthermore he arranged a terrific 4-days’ trekking to Machu Picchu for us! (By the way: Last night we found out at the hotel that Bea was the daughter of Petronio’s best friend – do coincidences really exist?) Besides I had time to write and upload a new post and pack my suitcase for Cuzco for Monday morning. When Nadine came back we quickly went to Larco Mar to stroll through the shops and have a coffee at Starbucks. Then it was already time for dinner which we had with Bea in a restaurant next to the excavations of Huaca Pucllana. Today we had an early night as we had to get up at 4:45 am next morning…

30.09.2011 Bolivia: Santa Cruz – Peru: Lima

After a good and late night at the Clapton’s Blues Bar I woke up around 9 am and went for breakfast at the pool. I picked up my laundry, uploaded some of my new posts while getting ready for my departure and packing my suitcases. I had sent my boarding pass per e-mail to the reception to have it printed out and ordered a taxi to the airport.

The procedure at the airport was fast, but once again I had 18 kg of excess baggage! My flight was with LAN, I came from Europe with, and after a short conversation with the nice employee I had the seat 1L and didn’t have to pay for the excess… With my last Bolivianos I had 2 Strawberry Daiquiris, uploaded my last prepared post and boarded the punctual flight to Lima. I had a fantastic flight of 2 ½ hours over the snowcapped Andes and the Lake of Titicaca!

Nadine kommt aus Amsterdam an / Nadine is arriving from Amsterdam

die zertrümmerte Fensterscheibe / the smashed window

xxxFranziska & Nadine

Ricardo, Petronio’s taxi driver, awaited me upon my arrival in Lima and soon after Nadine arrived from Zürich via Amsterdam! I looked forward very much travelling a part of my journey with a familiar face! We stored our luggage in the trunk and one piece on the front seat, sat in the back and exchanged our news. After a quarter of an hour we stood in traffic and suddenly someone smashed the window at Nadine’s side, a hand grabbed her backpack and I saw a man running over the street to a motorcycle on the other side… I got out the car and ran after him shouting very loud, but nobody moved or helped me, I had no chance, he was already gone! Back in the taxi Nadine only began to realize what had happened and had a shock! We drove with open window and pieces of glass all over to the next police station to rapport the assault. At the beginning Nadine had no idea what she had packed in her backpack – but we were lucky, her bag with the documents and money was not in there, but on the other hand the brand new camera of her mother and 2 credit cards which she had blocked immediately by telephone… : ( Only at the police station my dispassion faded and I had a terrible shock… we both shivered, couldn’t understand what had happened and realized how lucky we had been!

At 9:30 pm we finally arrived at the Hotel Colon (www.miraflorescolonhotel.com) where Petronio of Destination Peru (http://south-america.com.au/contact.htm) awaited us (who once again organized us the room for a sensational price) and Nadine’s friend Bea who she got to know 10 years ago in Cannes while studying French. Everybody was concerned! When I asked why nobody would help us I got the answer that people are afraid of revenge when leaving their address at the police… It was good to see familiar faces and we decided to have a nice dinner at the Portofino in Larco Mar where Pietro, a funny friend of Bea’s joined us…
